(1) BC Provincial Exams requirement In order to meet UBC's admission requirements, BC secondary school students must write the provincial examination component of four provincially examinable Grade 12 courses. For registration into first-year courses with prerequisites, students may use the appropriate Grade 12 course as a pre-requisite whether or not they have written the optional provincial exam component of that course. For more information, visit https://you.ubc.ca/ubc/counsellors/index.ezc (2) Application deadline fast approaching Please encourage students who are considering applying to UBC Vancouver or UBC Okanagan to submit their applications as soon as possible. The application deadline is Thursday, February 28. Once students have applied, it will take our Admissions staff some time to get back to them with their next steps. The sooner a student applies, the sooner we are able to make contact and move their application along. February 28 is also the last day for students who have already applied to make changes to their application. If students have changed their minds about their preferred campus or program, they must indicate their new preferences by February 28. (3) What they want most: Helping students make choices All UBC applicants are given the opportunity to apply for two programs on the application form. Students should be aware that we will focus strictly on their first choice when we receive their application. If students are admissible to their first choice, we will make them an offer of admission for that choice. We will NOT look at their second choice. UBC only considers a student's second choice should their first choice not be available to them. Therefore, it is critical for students to put what they want most to study as their first choice. (4) Nominate your best by February 28 UBC has over 100 Major Entrance scholarships, some worth as much as $40,000 over four years, for domestic students who demonstrate excellence in their scholastic performance and leadership in school and the community. School counsellors nominate candidates for these awards. Nominations for Major Entrance Scholarships for high school students are due February 28. The deadline for college and university students is June 15. For more information visit: https://you.ubc.ca/ubc/counsellors/mes.ezc (5) Self-admission for BC students opens mid-March The UBC Self-Admission system is an online tool that allows many applicants to receive an instant admission decision based on their interim course and grade information. We are currently updating the system, with plans to go online in mid-March. We recognize that interim grade information can come in many different shapes and sizes. As such, the Self-Admission system is equipped with instructions for students to help determine exactly what to report in different scenarios. These instructions will be available online on March 1, 2008 at https://you.ubc.ca/ubc/vancouver/selfadmission.ezc <https://you.ubc.ca/ubc/vancouver/selfadmission.ezc> . BC Grade 12 applicants will be notified via email with the open date of UBC Self-Admission and instructions on how to report their grades. Please encourage your students to become familiar with these instructions well in advance of the date they plan to input their grades. In case of a discrepancy between self-reported and official grades, the latter will be taken as the official version. (6) Change to English Language Admissions Standard requirement Effective immediately, any student who has studied full-time at an institution in Canada for the past three years automatically meets UBC's English Language Admission Standard (ELAS) admission requirement. In the past, students needed four years of study in Canada in order to meet this admission requirement. Students who have not gone to school in Canada for the past three years can meet ELAS in other ways. See https://you.ubc.ca/ubc/vancouver/elas.ezc. (7) Credit for IB and AP students At UBC, all AP courses are eligible for university level credit. In fact, we award AP credit to more high school students than any other university in Canada. UBC now recognizes transfer credit for IB Standard level Physics in addition to granting credit for all IB Higher level courses. For a complete list of UBC equivalents to AP and IB courses please see that admission section at https://you.ubc.ca <https://you.ubc.ca/> (8) What's next?
