Law 12
Up one levelCitizens should know their legal rights and responsibilities. Knowledge of the law is presupposed in our legal system, as illustrated by the maxim, “ignorance of the law is no excuse.” It follows that students should understand how laws are applied and reviewed. The relevance of legal studies extends beyond students’ need to know about the legal system and content of law. Students also need to understand the role of law and the benefits of the legal system. Legally literate students are more likely to become active, informed, and productive citizens, and are better equipped to participate effectively in a democratic society and recognize what conduct is regulated by law. Law 12 fosters skills and attitudes that enhance students’ abilities to address legal, social, and ethical issues, and reflect critically on the role of law in society. The study of law also promotes the skills and abilities needed to clearly express ideas, argue effectively and logically, and accurately interpret the written word.
